A meal gives you several reasons to speak Korean: describe a taste, compliment the cook or ask how to eat a dish. The original examples below focus on polite choices for a present-day restaurant or a meal with someone you know.
1. 입에서 녹아요 — It melts in your mouth
입에서 means “in the mouth,” and 녹아요 comes from 녹다, “to melt.” This is a figurative description of tenderness or texture.
Practice: 고기가 입에서 살살 녹아요. — The meat melts in my mouth. 살살 adds the sense of melting gently or smoothly. Compare the polite 녹아요 with the plain written form 녹는다.
2. 향 and 풍미 — aroma and flavour
향 refers to scent or aroma. 풍미 describes flavour or the combined impression of taste and aroma; it is useful in food descriptions but not necessary for every compliment.
Practice: 향이 좋아요. — It smells nice. 풍미가 깊어요. — It has a rich/deep flavour. These are impressions, not measurements of ingredient quality.
3. 맛있어요 and 맛있구나 — different endings
맛있어요 is a useful polite “It is delicious.” 맛있구나 expresses a discovery or realisation in a non-polite style. The ending -구나 is still used in modern Korean; it is not reserved for kings or historical dramas.
For a polite realisation, compare 맛있군요. A restaurant learner can simply say 정말 맛있어요 — It is really delicious — in an ordinary conversation.
4. 솜씨가 좋아요 — You are skilled
솜씨 refers to skill in making or doing something. 요리 솜씨가 좋아요 means someone is good at cooking.
놀라운 솜씨 is a noun phrase, “remarkable skill.” To form a complete polite statement, use 요리 솜씨가 정말 좋으세요 when respectfully complimenting the cook. Notice the difference between describing a dish and complimenting a person.
5. 이 음식 이름이 뭐예요? — What is this dish called?
This is a practical question when you want a dish’s name. 이게 뭐예요? is shorter: “What is this?” Pointing clearly at the item helps provide context.
Then try 어떻게 먹어요? — How do I eat it? — if you are unsure how to combine the ingredients or use the accompanying sauce.
